The agreement
These terms are an agreement between you and Mona (“Mona”, “we”, “us”), which runs whereismona.com and the Mona web app. By creating an account you agree to them and to our privacy policy. If you don’t agree, please don’t use Mona.
Who can use Mona
- You’re at least 21 years old.
- You’re looking to date. Mona is for dating only.
- You have one account, tied to a phone number that’s yours.
- You haven’t been banned from Mona before.
- You have not been convicted of a violent or sexual offense, and you are not required to register as a sex offender.
- Using Mona is legal for you where you live.
Your account and profile
- You sign in with a code sent to your phone. Keep your phone and your sign-in to yourself.
- Your photos must be of you, recent, and without anyone else as the focus. The Instagram handle must be yours. The selfie you take for review must be a real, current photo of you in the pose we ask for.
- You need push alerts or a verified email turned on, so a match or a plan change can reach you when the app is closed.
- A founder reviews every new profile before it goes live and may decline one without giving a reason. We don’t run background checks.
How Mona works
You go live for tonight (a window of up to four hours) or now (the next 90 minutes), solo or with a friend. You only see people who are also out and fit your preferences. When you like each other, it’s a match: Mona suggests a venue and a time, anyone can propose a change, and everyone confirms for themselves. If a plan isn’t agreed within 30 minutes, the match closes, with no penalty.
In a duo, either friend can like for the pair, and everyone has to confirm the plan. If one of you leaves, the plan is cancelled for everyone.
Dates happen at venues on our list of public places in Lower Manhattan, below 14th Street. We pick venues with care, but we don’t own, run or vouch for them, and opening hours can change. What you order and spend there is between you and the venue.
The rules
When you use Mona, you agree to:
- Be yourself. No fake profiles, no pretending to be someone else, no one else’s photos.
- Treat people with respect, in the app and in person. Consent matters, every time.
- Not harass, threaten, stalk, demean or discriminate against anyone, and not send sexual content or messages to people who didn’t ask for them.
- Meet at the planned public venue. Don’t try to find out where someone lives or is, and don’t share other people’s details, photos or messages outside Mona.
- Not use Mona for anything commercial: no selling, promotion, recruiting, soliciting, sex work or spam.
- Not scrape, automate, reverse-engineer or overload Mona, or get around blocks, reviews, bans or any security measure.
- Show up for plans you confirm, or cancel. Cancelling is always allowed and never penalized.
- Follow the law, including the venue’s rules and the legal drinking age.
No-shows, reports and enforcement
- After a date, each person privately says who showed up. Repeated no-show reports from different dates go to a founder, who may pause the account. A missed “I’m here” tap never counts against you on its own.
- Reporting someone also blocks them for you, which ends contact and cancels any plan between you. Founders are alerted right away and review every report.
- Founders may suspend an account while they look into a report, and may suspend or ban accounts that break these terms. Only founders can suspend or ban. If you think we got it wrong, email us.
Your safety
We review profiles and build in safety features, but we can’t guarantee who anyone is or how they’ll behave. Please look after yourself:
- Meet at the planned public venue and get there and home on your own.
- Use share-my-date to send a friend your plan.
- Leave whenever you want. Block and report anyone who makes you uncomfortable.
- In an emergency, call 911 first.
Your content
Your photos, bio and messages stay yours. You give us permission to store them and show them to other people as Mona works (as described in the privacy policy), for as long as they’re on Mona. We don’t use them for advertising. We may remove anything that breaks these terms.
Price
Mona is free. If we ever add paid features, we’ll tell you first, and you’ll never be charged without agreeing to it.
Pausing and deleting
You can pause your profile or delete your account at any time from your profile. Deleting is permanent: it cancels any live plan and removes your photos and personal data, as the privacy policy explains.
Changes
Mona is new, and features, the zone and these terms will change. We’ll update the date at the top when they do, and tell you in the app about changes that matter. Using Mona after that means you accept the new terms.
Disclaimers and liability
Mona is provided as is and as available. We work hard to keep it running, accurate and safe, but we can’t promise it will always be available or error-free, or that you’ll find a match.
To the extent the law allows, Mona isn’t liable for the conduct of other users or venues, on or off the app, or for indirect or consequential losses. Nothing in these terms limits liability that can’t be limited by law.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of New York. If a part of them turns out to be unenforceable, the rest still applies. Before anything formal, please email us at hello@whereismona.com so we can try to sort it out.
